Integrate with Integrity

Synopsis

Integrated learning curriculum is a current "hot" topic for schools seeking improved teaching and learning, and even increased test scores. This session provides theoretical and practical suggestions describing the importance of this idea, how to implement it with integrity, some ways to get started, and issues that may arise. The session is hands-on and brains-on, with activities appropriate for teachers and students alike.

Goals

Through participation, attendees will:

• Identify theories that support integrated and interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
  

• Identify the role of the arts in learning and thematic planning.
  
• Explore levels of intensity in integrated curriculum planning.
  
• Experience model(s) of integrated units that have multiple routes to learning, and honor the child’s way of learning/knowing.
  
• Learn exciting materials and practical, kid-tested strategies.

Participant Groupings

Whole school faculty, Discipline based teachers (art, music, movement/ physical education, drama/language arts; District-wide groups.

Suggested Time

One-day introductory session; two-day follow-up recommended.
