When I taught school full time, I made China silk scarves for movement.
My wonderful father-in-law blind stitched around the edges of these
large, colorful pieces of fabric, so they would be nearly weightless,
but wouldn’t
fray.
When I started doing workshops, many participants asked where they could
get scarves like mine. As I explored creating scarf sets, the cost of China
silk was prohibitive. I finally found this wonderful nylon that was light
enough to float on air, available in many vibrant and pastel colors, had
an interlocking weave that did not need hemming, and was reasonably priced.
I bought bolts and started cutting on my ping-pong table in the garage.
Today, we have our own dye lots and colors, and a wonderful company that
cuts the scarves in sizes for early childhood, young children, and older
kids. We make 9’ x 9’ canopies that work like parachutes, and
sometimes put together seasonal or streamer specials.
The scarves have many uses, limited only by the imagination of adults.
Bob McGrath, “Bob” on Sesame Street, told me his granddaughters
go for the scarves first thing when they come to visit. They make great
birthday gifts, favors, holiday gifts from grandparents or favorite aunts
and uncles. They are a rich teaching and learning tool, and our IDEAS Music
is perfect to inspire movement.
We are thrilled to be able to offer these quality scarves at such a reasonable
price, and we hope you will enjoy them with the children in your lives!
